Fouad Bouatba / The Missing /
The materials composing this work are stranded pieces of clothing that have been collected from the beach in Annaba – third largest city of the country, in the East coast. They are believed to belong to young men trying to illegally cross the Mediterranean Sea.
Inspired by true stories he’s heard or witnessed, the artist wanted to pay tribute to the missing people, known as Harragas – "those who burn" (the frontier) – a migration issue that is continues to affect the forthcoming generations from the region.
The Missing was first showed at the ESA School in Dunkirk, France and Kef-Noun Gallery in Constantine, Algeria (2015-2016).
